Analysis of Regional Health Preservation Features of Scholars’ Village Settlements in Zhaoqing in Ming and Qing Dynasties

Abstract: From the perspective of health preservation with traditional Chinese medicine under the Confucian culture, this paper focuses on the family settlements from the Central Plains. It takes pedigree and investigation after moving to Zhaoqing as the research objects. The analysis is conducted from three aspects: physical space, spiritual space and material elements including the living space vegetation. Then it outlines the regional health features under the integration of the culture of Central Plains and the Lingnan climate. In the end, this paper uses Taoxi Village as an example, which is famous for the imperial examination and longevity. The results show that the He clan people integrated their choice in the village location and space building with the Central Plains culture and moral codes, which provided a healthy physical living space conforming to the local natural circumstances. Meanwhile, the integration of the clan ideology and Confucianism to bequeath to the family achieved a harmonious social environment, which furnished spiritual security for the clansmen. The fusion of the health maintenance wisdom in the traditional culture with the local natural vegetation produced a plant community, which integrated with the “edible, healing and landscape” for the village settlements. By integrating health treatment into the daily diet and life, an excellent environment was provided for the health of the families on three levels: exopathic, endopathic and non-endo-exopathic.
