Study on the Numeral Culture of Plant Arrangement in Jiangnan Gardens in the Ming Dynasty

  • Traditional numeral culture has a wide influence on cities, architectures and gardens. As one of the four main elements of Chinese classical gardens, plant is also influenced by numeral culture and carries out unique aesthetic ideas. Taken plant arrangement of Jiangnan gardens in Ming Dynasty as research object, combined with garden literature, landscape paintings and painting theory and based on traditional classification, such as isolated planting, opposite planting, clump planting and group planting, this essay summarizes and analyzes plant arrangement and their corresponding numbers, discusses plant configuration rules under the influence of numeral culture, further explores the reasons of the various numbers of configurations from the perspectives of plant habit, traditional culture, landscape painting theory and atmosphere.
