Resilient Land Use Planning to Deal with Climate Change and Rapid Population Growth in Coastal Areas: A Case Study of Matanzas River Estuary in Florida, USA

  • Coupled with rapid population growth in the coastal regions, sea level rise caused by global climate change may bring new challenges for land use planning in low-lying coastal regions. Different from the traditional land use planning concepts and methods, this paper introduces the concept of resilient land use planning. Taking Matanzas River basin in Florida as an example, it integrates sea level rise impact model, species habitat model and land use prediction model by building a comprehensive model based on GIS. The model is used to predict land use planning schemes adapted to sea level rise. The results of the study can provide reference for coastal areas, especially for delta areas, in response to climate change in China.
