Characteristics and Inspirations of Landscape Performance Series Course of Landscape Architecture Profession in USA

  • The research and practice of landscape performance is a focus of the landscape architecture profession. The Landscape Performance Series (LPS) study promoted by the American Landscape Architecture Foundation has led to the integration of landscape performance assessment courses in the curriculum system of landscape architecture education in the U.S. By analyzing the construction of landscape performance curriculum in American universities, this paper provides a reference for the construction of landscape performance assessment courses in China. Based on the 19 landscape performance series courses offered by American universities, it analyzes the course objectives, opening profiles and types of landscape performances of interest. It taps the integration with landscape performance evaluation of the courses in four perspectives, which are theoretical research, case study, toolkit application and project practice. The teaching characteristics of the landscape performance series are reflected in the effectiveness of the project through performance evaluation, evidence-based design based on practical research, and the combination of performance evaluation and parametric design. The problems existing in the courses include the difficulty in obtaining some evaluation data; the application limits of the evaluation indicators and tools; and the lack of integration of the evaluation process with the project design.
