Cognition and Protection of Beijing Central Axis from the Perspective of Historic Urban Landscape

As a concept regarding urban conservation for the World Heritage sites, historic urban landscape (HUL) provides an integrated method. HUL does not only address the protection of the material morphological characteristics of the urban heritage, but also the continuation and sustainable development of urban life. HUL originates from the the concept of cultural landscape. Cultural landscape and its prosperity has deeply impacted the development of the World Heritage. Whether HUL is capable of becoming a new category of urban heritage, breaking the limitations of value identification, protection and management being “groups of buildings”, it is an worth discussing issue. The nomination of Beijing central axis is an significance practice to identify outstanding universal value (OUV) and make management plan for urban heritage on the perspective of HUL.
