Comparative Study of the Texturing Method of Landscape Painting and Picturesque Rockery Art of Gardens in Ming and Qing Dynasties

  • The pursuit of picturesque conception was an important tendency of the rockery art and influenced the rockery practice in gardens during Ming and Qing Dynasties. This research sets out with the texturing method of landscape painting based on relevant historical materials of gardening and painting theory, and carries out a comparative analysis of the texturing method of landscape painting and picturesque rockery art in Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is found that: 1) The use of the texturing method in the rockery design in gardens in Ming and Qing Dynasties was closely related to the summary of it in this period. Influenced by the social literary trend of returning to the ancients and seeking the sources in painting, it once became possible to provide reference for the texturing method, which was rare before Ming and Qing Dynasties; 2) Drawing on the texturing method became an important method in practicing the picturesque rockery art, so that there were concrete methods guided by the texturing method in each significant process; 3) In Ming and Qing Dynasties, there was also convergence trend in the evaluation of landscape painting and rockery art. Whether the pictorial texturing method was applied once became an important evaluation and appreciation standard. Through the comparative analysis, it provides a reference for the contemporary practice of rockery art by using the texturing method of traditional landscape painting, and has some enlightenment for further exploring the value of picturesque rockery art of Ming and Qing Dynasties.
